Is AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-55 a fast laptop?

I am buying this laptop for my brother for basic home use and school work. It is on sale in Circuit City for $569.99. Is this computer good? It is a Toshiba. Also please let me know if it is fast and how it compares to Pentium. Because I am not too familiar with Amd. Thanks
