Should I get a puppy or an adult dog?

We live in a furnished apartment. Therefore, none of the furniture is mine. My husband and I would like to get a puppy and it will be our first. Our apartment allows pets but we are responsible for any damages. We were thinking about getting a poodle or maltese puppy but then it would chew on everything right? So is it better to get a dog that is at least 1yrs old so they are already housebroken?
