Aquarium filtration add on?

I have three tanks,and I just started buying activated charcoal and putting them in various size mesh bags.I place these bags near the filter and they really seem to be cleaning the water well,I no longer have that musty oder and the water is crystal clear.Is this a safe thing to do and should I continue it?Thanks for your reply.
